Stepping into the heart of Phoenix, Arizona for my first portrait photoshoot was a journey filled with surprises and revelations. Coming from a backdrop of lush greenery and mountain landscapes, the arid beauty of the desert presented a stark yet captivating contrast—a canvas waiting to be explored through my lens.
The subject of my shoot, Jennene, embodied a vision of femininity that challenged conventional norms. Clad in a sharp, tailored suit amidst the rugged desert terrain, she effortlessly exuded confidence and grace. The choice to showcase femininity through a suit was deliberate—a celebration of strength, elegance, and the power of self-expression.
When I relocated to Arizona, I felt apprehensive about stepping away from the familiar. It wasn't just the landscape that was different; every aspect of my daily life was changing. I yearned for my art and inner self to thrive in a more accepting environment, yet I struggled to give myself permission to embrace this change. However, through creating these portraits, I played with a newfound harmony in the comfort and discomfort of change, the self understanding of a twenty-something, and the balance of my own masculinity and femininity. These portraits allowed me to visualize and experience what that balance could look and feel like.
As the shoot progressed, I felt a sense of fulfillment and purpose wash over me. In that moment, I realized that moving to Phoenix wasn't just about chasing my passion—it was about embracing the challenges and joys that come with self discovery (in that moment, with my camera). Each click of the shutter was a testament to my commitment to storytelling through visual art. Each click of the shutter was a testament to my commitment to myself.
Reflecting on my journey so far, I am grateful for the opportunity to call Phoenix my home and a new muse. It's a city that continues to inspire me with its vibrant culture, diverse landscapes, and warm community of creatives. With each portrait shoot, I strive to not only capture moments but to create images that resonate and evoke emotion.
